BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: FUN AND THRILLS OF KNOWING MY GIANT SNAILS

Bonding with giant African snail pic 1As humans we tend to bond with what we love. The essence is to form a mutually beneficial relationship. It is therefore not a misnomer bonding with giant African snail kept in captivity. We have edible snails in Africa and these snails are collectively called giant African snails. These snails are of different shapes and colours some of which are reared by me. It is fun watching and studying the behavior of my giant African snails. I am thrilled with the much I have discovered concerning these giant snails. My knowledge of them has made me more painstaking in nurturing them.

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: BONDING WITH THE SNAILS IS ESSENTIAL FOR GREATER PRODUCTIVITY

Bonding with giant African snail is thrilling  especially as I get to know each species. Each species has its peculiarity and they adapt in captivity when given something close to what they get in the wild. This entails supplying them with what is good for them. My giant African snails are all kept in a single pen hence I mete out the same treatment to them. I had kept them more as a hobby and for consumption. They lay eggs that are hatched but only a few of those babies make it to adult stage. I want the giant African snails to be more productive hence I apply my knowledge of them to restructure the rearing methodology.

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: IDENTIFYING THE SNAILS IN THE PEN

In bonding with the giant African snail I realized the reason why they are not the same shape or colour is because they are of different family.

Identification of snails

The snails in my pen are of different species and from my studies I list below the ones I can identify and call by their names.

  • Achatina Fulica
  • Achatina Achatina

Archachatina Marginata: this one has sub species and I have three of them namely:

  • Marginata
  • Suturalis
  • Ovum

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: THE GAINS

Bonding with giant African snail has greatly changed my prior perception of snail farming.
Over the years Snail farming has been a hobby I pursued happily. I derive fun watching them in the habitat I constructed for them. The snails are forced to adapt to the change of environment.
Prior to now I had not really considered making my snail farming hobby become another venture that should generate income to support my meagre pension.

Now that I get to know them better I also see that if well taken care of in line with what each species desires they would be more:

  • Productive
  • Reduced Death
  • Cannibalism reduced
  • Elimination  of Stunted growth
  • More of the eggs will hatch
  • Increased survival of baby snails
  • The Snail farm will become a viable venture
  • Existing and intending Snail farmers can learn and benefit from my shared experience

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: FUTURE PLANS FOR THE SNAILS

I am going to restructure the snailery changing the way I had been rearing them in the past.
Sorting of the snails according to species for better productivity and providing separate housing arrangement is paramount . The more productive and viable species will get better attention.
Henceforth I will focus on species that turns out to be more profitable.

LUKE 3:9 (NASB)
Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

BONDING WITH GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL: CONCLUSION

Rearing of snails like any venture requires attention and if done with commitment it brings reward. Caring for snails is not strenuous and can be done with ease. You dont need too much money to start but you need to be patient as they are slow growers.

  2. I am impressed and in love with your modest contribution to growth. In particular, snail farming is a great idea being a simple way of providing protein supplement to low income families. I do wish to know if you have any literature on this farming especially, any one written by our Nigerian farmer or teacher.

    • Not really but online there are bits here and there that one can update with one’s personal experience. God’s grace I will be adding more posts based on what is happening with the ones I am rearing. Snails are slow growers so one needs patience to really understand them.

    • Depends on where you stay. They are scare and expensive now as many hibernated during the dry season but in a couple of months time when the rainy season commences they will be available in the markets.
