HOW TO CROCHET GRANNY SQUARE IN DOUBLE CROCHET (DC) STITCH

Materials/Tools:

You can use any size of hook to match the size of yarn you are using. Here I use size 4mm (size G) to match the scraps of medium weight yarn I used.

Medium weight yarn or yarn of your choice.

Scissors

Darning needle

Stitch marker (optional)

ABBREVIATIONS

R(1): Round(1)

ch: chain

dc: double crochet

sc: single crochet

sl sp: slip stitch

beg st: beginning stitch

Foundation Round: Start with a magic ring.

R1: Work 1sc ch5, * 3dc, ch3,** rep from *to** two more time, 2dc. Slip stitch to second of ch5 stitch.

Note: single crochet: insert your hook to the ring. Yarn over and pull through and out of the ring. You have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops.

R2: slip stitch to the ch3 space. Work 1sc, ch5, 3dc, *ch1, 3dc, ch3, 3dc to the next ch3 space,** rep from *to**two more times, 2dc to the first ch3 space. Slip stitch to second of ch5 stitch.

R3:  slip stitch to the ch3 corner space. Work 1sc, ch5, 3dc, *ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space, ch1, 3dc, ch3, 3dc to the next ch3 corner space,** rep from *to**two more times, ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space, ch1, 2dc to the first ch3 space. Slip stitch to second of ch5 stitch.  

R4: slip stitch to the ch3 corner space. Work 1sc, ch5, 3dc, *ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space (twice), ch1, 3dc, ch3, 3dc to the next ch3 corner space,** rep from *to**two more times, ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space (twice), ch1, 2dc to the first ch3 space. Slip stitch to second of ch5 stitch.   R5: slip stitch to the ch3 corner space. Work 1sc, ch5, 3dc, *ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space (three times), ch1, 3dc, ch3, 3dc to the next ch3 corner space,** rep from *to**two more times, ch1, 3dc in the next ch1 space (three times), ch1, 2dc to the first ch3 space. Slip stitch to second of ch5 stitch. Fasten off the yarn.

The granny square measures 5inches square… Your size may vary depending on the size of yarn you used and your gauge. For best satisfaction you can crochet several granny squares and assemble then join to make a bedspread, coverlet, table cover, cushion cover, scarf, baby blanket, and so many creative and fun projects.

At the end of round 5 the granny square for this tutorial is completed.

You are however not limited to this size.

If you want a bigger square you can continue the round until you get the required size likewise for a smaller size square you can reduce the number of rounds.
